I didn’t like Up.  I went into the film with high expectations, coming off of Wall-E and Ratatouille (yeah, didn’t see Cars, nor Nemo or Monsters Inc for that matter.)  My impression from the trailer was that this going to be in the vein of Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island (above) with Pixar’s flair for visual humor.  Humor that was demonstrated so well in that opening short, my favorite part of the film.

The thing that will be brought up a lot is the mature subject matter of the film.  And I do appreciate that, and I liked Carl’s character quite a lot.  But what happens to him, and I mean in the present.  I loved the backstory.  In the present, you saw the movie in the trailer.  He goes to South America, meets a villain who controls dogs, and is after something.  Assumably the house or bird from the trailer.  Besides that, I swear nothing happens.  No surprises.

I was most disappointed in the dog characters I think.  Doug was tolerable, with a few good lines.  The squirrel jokes were bad.  And there was so much potential with the voice collars and the other dogs, but I didn’t like a word that came out of any of the other ones.

I can’t type much more, so I guess I’ll end it here.
